The design+
Atlanta, September 22-24, 1906. After a summer of white-supremacist campaigning for governor and a run of newspaper extras alleging assaults on white women - claims later found to be unsubstantiated - white mobs numbering in the thousands attacked Black Atlantans downtown, beating and killing people in the streets and destroying Black-owned businesses on Decatur Street and around Five Points. The violence ran for days and included a police raid on Brownsville, where Black residents had armed to defend themselves. At least twenty-five Black Atlantans were killed; historians believe the real number was higher. For most of the century that followed it was taught, when taught at all, as a "riot." It was a massacre, and Atlanta has only recently started saying so.
